About
Cummings Architecture planted its roots among the mighty oak-lined streets of Mobile’s Old Dauphin Way District in 1999. Immersed in a community with rich historical influences, Cummings Architecture continually strives for the preservation of its existing built environment and for the revitalization of a thriving downtown area. Cummings Architecture also enjoys implementing smart design concepts and innovative space planning for new developments all along the Gulf Coast: from Mobile and Baldwin Counties to Mississippi, Louisiana and Georgia.
Proprietor and Principal Architect, Benjamin “Ben” Cummings was born and raised in Mobile, Alabama and he staunchly appreciates the integrity of the traditional design ideals which surrounded him. Classically trained by the Historic American Building Survey (HABS) he easily identifies architectural styles, details, materials and construction methods and incorporates them in adaptive re-use projects. He applies these standards in his new modern designs as well.
You have likely given an approving nod to one of Cummings’ many designs throughout the downtown area, such as the renovated Neisner, Kress, WALA Buildings, the Athelstan “A” Club, and the newly revamped location for the Lagniappe Newspaper. Further west and on a more contemporary note, Gulf Distributing, Performance Contractors, and numerous outdated shopping centers have all received elaborate Cummings Architecture “facelifts” for inspiring commercial upgrades. If you have ever been to Fairhope, you cannot miss the Fairhope Museum of History façade entrance or the iconic “Dobson Building” located on Magnolia Avenue. While Cummings’ range is vast, from historic to modern, he incorporates attributes from one to the other creating innovative and timeless design.
Benjamin P. Cummings has worked closely with Mobile Historic Development Commission and its review boards, the City of Mobile Urban Development Office, the Mayor’s Office and city building officials for over 20 years. He has also served on numerous community boards such as the Old Dauphin Way Review Board, Keep Mobile Beautiful and the Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce Governmental Affairs Committee. Cummings received his education at Auburn University and is licensed to practice in Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia and Louisiana. Cummings is an active member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) and has won recognition by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the AIA National Convention.
